Personal History

Bee Low

I'm Alexander Bülow, born on 31st May 1974, in the working class district of Berlin-Wedding and today I live under my artist name Bee Low. Since my youth, my life has been deeply intertwined with Hip Hop culture, which continues to shape and inspire me. As a human beatboxer, graffiti writer, host, event organizer and founder of the Beatbox Battle World Championships and the History of Berlin cultural journal, I have found my path in the urban cultural scene. Together with my wife Marina and our son Nikita Maximus, born in 2014, I live in the quiet and green district of Berlin-Grunewald. My son already shares my enthusiasm for Breaking, Beatboxing and Style Writing, carrying forward the creative energy of our family to the next generation.

The Beginning of a Passion
My school years began in 1981 in Wilmersdorf, a district in the western part of Berlin. During my childhood, Kurfürstendamm, with its bright lights and vibrant energy, became a place full of impressions that stimulated my imagination. In 1983, the first Break Dance wave from the Bronx reached Berlin and I was immediately captivated by the movement. Armed with a portable cassette recorder and moves I imitated from TV shows like Ronny’s Pop Show and Formel Eins, I started dancing on the streets of Ku’damm. Break Dancing became my first form of self-expression and my gateway into a world of creativity and freedom.

In 1985, I discovered the world of Graffiti writing through the TV documentary U-Bahn Bilder & Verrückte Beine. Fascinated by this new form of expression, I began painting small figures on electrical boxes and inside phone booths in my neighborhood, aiming to bring the Bronx's vision to my community. By 1986, I attempted my first spray-painting projects and a year later, I started tagging large Graffiti Tags on the Berlin Wall near Wollankstraße in the Wedding district.

Music was ever present in my family. My uncle Manfred Bülow, who operated a recording studio in Berlin-Tegel, introduced me to the fundamentals of music production and let me experiment with his Yamaha DX7 synthesizer. Inspired by these experiences, I set up a small home studio in my childhood bedroom. With an 8-bit drum machine, an echo effects unit with a microphone, a mixing desk and two turntables, I began learning beatboxing and experimenting with scratching techniques.

Hip Hop Culture as a Life Path
By the late 1980s, I became more involved in Berlin's Graffiti scene through friends. A significant meeting point was the Friedrichstraße S-Bahn station, where I exchanged ideas with other writers and built new friendships. At the same time, the Spirale youth center in my neighbourhood became my second home. There, I explored various forms of creative expression whether by watching indie bands record music in the studio or participating in weekly Break Dance battles.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 was a turning point. Suddenly, a whole new world opened up to me. I frequently traveled with friends to East Berlin on the S-Bahn, tagging my name on train doors. Around this time, I began immersing myself in the art of beatboxing. In 1990, I stepped into the media world by producing the radio show Hip Hop Corner on Berlin's Offener Kanal at Voltastraße 5 in Wedding. Simultaneously, I gained early experience as a host at smaller Hip Hop events. These formative years fostered a profound connection to Berlin's underground scene.

In 1993, I joined forces with friends from the Graffiti scene to form the T2B Crew, creating large-scale Graffiti murals that quickly garnered attention within the Berlin community. Our first major milestone as a professional writing team came in 1995 when we won first place at the Graffiti Championship held at the legendary YAAM Club in Kreuzberg. This success marked a high point in my artistic journey and solidified our position in the Graffiti community.

My Entry into the Entertainment World
In the late 1990s, I founded the lifestyle agency Schwarzmarkt Syndikat to support friends and creative talents in my circle. This led to my work as a master of ceremonies for Rap, DJ and Break Dance battles across Germany. However, my biggest project began in 2002: I launched the Beatbox Battle Network, a platform uniting beatboxing artists from around the globe. Organizing the first German Beatbox Championship on 19th September 2002, marked the start of a completely new chapter in my life.

In the years that followed, I curated beatboxing events in over 28 countries and performed on major stages across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. My motto, Maximum Respect, became both my signature phrase and a reflection of my artistic and personal values. Today, I look back with pride on a journey filled with creativity, passion and a desire to transcend boundaries. My goal remains to share these values and inspire the next generation.
